Dial up is just a joke. It takes an hour just to check emails. Downloads literally take DAYS (no joke, 110% serious). The ping rate is far, far too high for online gaming. When the phone rings, the internet is cut off, and you have to start all over on whatever you were doing. I pay $20.00 a month for my dial-up. It isn't worth it. I wouldn't even say it's worth $5.00. I spent FIVE HOURS in just an attempt to order my daughter a Christmas present. I went to my mom's house and used her AT&T U-Verse. It took 5 minutes. My son has been trying and trying for months to find a faster internet service, but it just isn't there. Satellite internet is available, but it doesn't fit our needs. We desperately need internet. REAL INTERNET.

I found your website by accident - thought it was my state's broadbandnow site.

I live in VT and do not had any internet or cell phone service where I live. Ongoing fight with Fairpoint, Verizon etc - and I am not alone here in southern vermont.

Sadly, it's nice to see others across the US are having the same difficulty as we are in VT tring to get broadband or even cell phone services. Companies just dont want to spend $$$ on us backroad rural houses as they are not going to get their money back. The will not spend 10,000 on equipment to service only 1 or 2 houses (estimate of course). Dial up is a joke!

Hoping you have better luck than we are having here in VT - it not only hurts consumer but also the economy - dont know how businesses can function w/o internet access.

I think there are some great suggestions here. I don't know how long it would take to apply for, and get accepted/rejected for a grant, but I think it's worth pursuing. I also think amortizing cost through a co-op is also a great idea. $2600 might be a lot to bite off all at once, but amortized over several years and it's significantly less than my family cell phone plan. That's a lot easier to chew on..

I think Cable is the best way to go. It has a lot of 'headroom' in terms of speed. I would consider this an investment, and in fact might even have a quantifiable payoff timeframe (I have, for instance, about $70/month in various wireless data plans that I would get rid of if I had 'real' fixed internet.

You can count me in for this.

Charter has broadband one tenth of a mile from my house. I can see the pole that has it. I approached Charter to ask about connecting. The company wants to charge us $8000.00 to run the cable that tenth of a mile. I think this is outrageous. Since there is no competition and after reading the Charter contract with Webster Township we have no leverage. Everything goes to the state and no one cares about my house on my one mile road where I can see the cable one tenth of a mile from the house. My wife and I are really frustrated. We are willing to help with any grant writing.

Chris thanks for all the info you've provided. I, also would be willing to pay my share. I think the Charter option would be best if everyone was ok with it.
Thanks
